DescriptionLakhauri Īnt, also known as *patli īnt* (पतली ईंट) or *laghu īnt* (लघु ईंट), are thin, small-format bricks prevalent in Indic heritage architecture, particularly during the Mughal and Sikh periods. These ceramic units, sourced from alluvial clay deposits across Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, were fired at temperatures yielding a compressive strength of 2-20 MPa. The approximate dimensions are 23cm x 11cm x 4cm. Water absorption ranges from 12-25%, with a density of 1500-2000 kg/m³ and porosity of 18-35%. Their thermal conductivity is 0.6-0.8 W/mK. Historically, *lakhauri īnt* were employed in wall construction, vaults, *jali* (intricate brickwork), paving, and decorative panels. Conservation necessitates careful consideration of their inherent fragility and the use of compatible repair mortars. Traditional brick hammers [1] were used in their production. The bricks' composition and firing process contribute to their durability, though weathering and salt efflorescence pose challenges. Understanding the *īnt's* (ईंट) material properties is crucial for preserving Mughal-era and subsequent structures.
