The formidable Ranthambore Fort, a bastion of Chauhan Rajput power, witnessed one of the most poignant sieges in medieval Indic history under Hammir Dev Chauhan. His defiant stand against Alauddin Khalji's formidable forces in 1301 CE culminated in a tragic yet valorous *Jauhar*, where Rajput women, led by Rani Rangadevi, immolated themselves to protect their honour, a profound act of sacrifice that etched the fort's name into the annals of Rajputana. This particular event underscored Ranthambore's strategic importance and the fierce independence of its rulers, marking a critical juncture in the Delhi Sultanate's expansion into Rajasthan. Beyond this climactic siege, Ranthambore's historical trajectory was shaped by its pivotal location, making it a coveted prize for successive empires. Following Prithviraj Chauhan's defeat in 1192 CE, his son Govinda Raja IV established a Chauhan lineage here under Delhi Sultanate suzerainty, maintaining a degree of autonomy. Later, the fort endured Mughal capture under Akbar in 1569 CE, before eventually becoming an integral part of the Jaipur princely state, serving as a royal hunting preserve. Its sophisticated water harvesting systems, including numerous *kunds* and *baolis*, testify to advanced Indic engineering prowess, crucial for sustaining its formidable defenses through prolonged sieges.
